Fiqh is not just about legal rulings; it is a path to true fear of Allah. As Ibn Mas'ud said, "Knowledge is not knowing many narrations, rather knowledge is the fear of Allah." This understanding shapes how a student of knowledge should approach Fiqh.

To build a strong foundation in Fiqh, Abdussalam bin Muhammed ash-Shuway'ir says one must:

Seek Knowledge With the Goal of Increasing Your Fear of Allah – True Fiqh deepens taqwa, not just intellectual understanding.

Benefit: Prevents knowledge from becoming purely academic and ensures it brings one closer to Allah.

Memorize the Fundamentals – The Quran & Hadith

Benefit: Ensures direct access to the primary sources of Islamic knowledge.

Understand Tafsir and Quranic Evidence – Learning how rulings are derived from the Quran is essential.

Benefit: Strengthens one’s ability to connect rulings directly to divine revelation.

Study Hadith Related to Rulings – Fiqh is built on authentic texts, especially Hadith dealing with commands and prohibitions.

Benefit: Ensures that one's understanding of Islamic law is directly tied to the practice and teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.

Memorize Classical Texts (Mutun) – These serve as a structured framework for deeper study.

Benefit: Condenses essential knowledge into your mind, allowing you to recall it instantly without relying on books.

Having the Complete Toolset – Mastering the necessary tools from other sciences (such as Arabic language, usul al-fiqh, and maqasid).

Benefit: Enhances your ability to understand and analyze fiqh properly.

Learn from Scholars – Knowledge should be taken from experienced scholars, especially elders with deep understanding.

Benefit: Ensures a proper transfer of knowledge with wisdom and experience, avoiding misinterpretation.

Understand Fiqh Branches (Furu’) – Knowing detailed rulings helps in practical application.

Benefit: Allows one to provide guidance in real-life situations, making Fiqh relevant and applicable.

Study Differences of Opinion – Awareness of scholarly disagreements sharpens reasoning and broadens understanding.

Benefit: Promotes tolerance, helps in dealing with contemporary issues, and strengthens intellectual depth.
